Daughter of Evil Lyrics

Somehow, it's always the evil characters that capture my attention. Not really sure why.

Daughter of Evil

Lyrics/Composition/Arrangement: mothy (Evil P)
作詞・作曲・編曲:mothy(悪ノP)

Vocal: Rin Kagamine

Lyrics/

Once upon a time,
there was a evil, unjust kingdom,
and at its head,
a fourteen-year-old princess.

Luxurious and gorgeous furnishings,
a servant whose face resembled hers,
a favorite horse named Josephine,
everything was all hers.

If money starts to run low,
squeeze more out of the ignorant peasants;
anyone who disagrees with me
is to be purged!

"Now, kneel before me!"

The evil flower blooms beautifully,
shaded in brilliant color.
The surrounding pitiful weeds
can just become nourishment and rot away.

The tyrannical princess fell in love
with a blue-haired person across the sea,
but in a neighboring country, he
was instantly taken with a green-haired girl.

Mad with jealousy, the princess
one day called her ministers to her.
In a soft voice she told them,
"That green land is to be reduced to ruins."

Countless houses were burned to the ground,
countless lives were erased.
The lamentations of the suffering people
failed to reach the princess.

"Oh, it's time for afternoon tea."

The evil flower blooms beautifully,
shaded in the colors of madness.
Even though it is a pretty flower,
ah, countless thorns make it impossible to touch.

Finally, people arose
who felt they had to overthrow the evil princess.
At the head of this mob
was a female knight in red armor.

As they planned, the piled-up anger
enveloped the entire country.
Endless fighting left everyone tired;
even the soldiers found they were not enemies.

Finally the palace was surrounded,
and the servants had fled.
The beautiful princess
was finally taken into custody.

"You ungrateful peasants!"

The evil flower blooms beautifully,
shaded with the colors of sadness.
The princess's paradise;
fragile, transient, it crumbled to ruin.

Once upon a time,
there was a evil, unjust kingdom,
and at its head,
a fourteen-year-old princess.

The time of punishment was set at 3 in the afternoon;
the time the church bell rung.
She who was called "princess",
alone in her cell, what did she think of?

Finally the time came;
the bell rang out the end.
Ignoring the people below her,
the princess had only this to say:

"Ah, it's time for afternoon tea."

The evil flower fell beautifully,
shaded in brilliant colors.
Off in the distant future, the people would say,
ah, she was truly a daughter of evil.

The Diva of the Modern Age

Miku Hatsune is so cute!

Okay. Got that out of my system. So yesterday, there was a concert: Miku Hatsune Live Party 2011, in Tokyo. Sadly I couldn't go to the actual event itself (I'll save random trips to Tokyo for the weekends), but I was able to go to the movie theater in Kyoto and watch the concert live from afar. And I'm very glad I did.

I got to the theater around 6:45; the show was supposed to start at 7. After meeting a friend who was also going to the concert, we headed into the movie theater. We got a free little glow stick and a tote bag when we went in, because it wouldn't be a Japanese concert without glow sticks to wave around in the air. And yes, we did. The movie theater was a field of little glowy lights during the entire concert.

Why was this concert so cool, you ask? Simple. Hologram. The Vocaloids are not human beings, after all. We're referring to computer programs designed to synthesize voice, primarily for singing. I say "primarily" because Miku did greet us after her first song ("Good evening everyone!"), so she's certainly capable of "normal" speech, although it does sound a little awkward.

Of course, Japan being Japan, said computer programs are given the face and form of a 16-year-old girl with bright blue hair that's probably longer than she is tall. According to the booklet I bought at the concert, Miku is 16, is about 5'2", and weighs less than a hundred pounds.

... If they're trying to get me to see her as more "human", it's working. I mean, there's what I started this post with...

Young Alive! Lyrics

Nana Mizuki is my favorite singer and voice actor, period. Her music was where I first started trying to understand Japanese lyrics. I could spend a very long time yapping about how awesome she is, but I'll just get the lyrics for this song up and get on with it.

Young Alive!

Artist/Lyrics: Nana Mizuki

Composer: Hirobumi Miyake (Not sure about that reading...)

Arranger: Junpei Fujita (Elements Garden)
(Elements Garden)

Lyrics:

Impossible problems, too many choices,
show me how to make my attitude clear!
What has you confused? Let me fly!

Nowhere to go, no other choice,
I'll just take off through the drama of self-education.
No one could fake this.

Special Race

I toss away the shoes my feet were jammed into, kissing the sun,
and once I count off seven seconds, the special race begins!

Are you Ready? OK? come on! Let’s GO!

Board the rainbow-colored machine, high in the sky;
although it's an impossible future, we'll put it into motion.
And once we get the green light,
full power, all out! Advance!
You're not alone!
Are you ready? OK? Come on! Let's go!

In high spirits before this beautiful scenery;
flawless, and yet I still can't share my thoughts.
It should still be sleeping... I'll get serious!

What should we do? What will this become?
Uncertainty, you know, is the first step to progress!
It brings forth the star that is our target.

Feel the new rhythm that reaches to each cell of your body;
once we count off seven beats, awaken to the rule of freedom!

振り切ったmeter(針)はもう戻れない
Are you HAPPY? I will make it together!

The rainbow-colored sky slides past;
although it's a better tomorrow, we'll create it!
We can't return anymore to the meter we've shaken free of;
yeah, there's no such thing as a place we can't reach.
Take my hand!
Are you happy? I will make it, together!

Precedent?
Because we don't need anything like that,
come on, let's push on forward!

Are you Ready? OK? come on! Let’s GO!

Board the rainbow-colored machine, high in the sky;
although it's an impossible future, we'll put it into motion.
And once we get the green light,
full power, all out! Advance!
You're not alone!
Are you ready? OK? Come on! Let's go!

On Song Translations

Well, first of all, they're what I do for fun. There's a reason why I can remember the lyrics to what must seem like every anime song ever, and it's not just because I have a good memory. If I really like a song, I'll buy a CD that has it, copy the lyrics into my computer (in kanji/kana and romaji), and then take a shot at translating it.

However, I'm probably not spending as much time on them as I should. I'm taking a translation class this semester, and it's already taught me that I'm ignoring too much. For example, with Wolf Girl just recently, I tried to throw kind of a childish air into my translation, mostly because so much of it was in katakana when there were kanji that could have been used. I have no idea if it worked. I have no idea if the original lyrics or song give off that air in the first place. I mean, I think it does, but...

This is one of the reasons why I'm posting them. I know that only a very few people that see this are going to be capable of offering comment, so it's not my only reason, but I do want comments.

And the other note? Well, even if I did spend an appropriate amount of time on them, they're going a lot faster than they used to. Back during my first year at Brandeis, it took nearly a week to even type the lyrics into my computer, since I had to look up nearly every single kanji and my listening skill was bad to say the least. Now, I just did that copying process in about 15 minutes. There were exactly two kanji that I weren't already familiar with, I should have remembered one of them, and I listened to the song to figure it out. Even if I take several hours to actually translate the song, this will still be much faster than it used to be.

Progress really does feel good.

Wolf Girl Lyrics

I like Miku Hatsune.

Don't know why I picked this one though. I do tend to like tsundere-type characters, so maybe that's it...?

Wolf Girl

Artist: Kura-P Feat. Miku Hatsune

Composer: Kura-P

Lyrics/

I woke up at two in the morning,
the moon was shining brightly.
My heart’s beating fast,
my body feels hot...
have I transformed?

Strawberry cake, my teddy bear...
Come on, of course I’m an adult!
But you know, I just love - I mean, hate it!

Wolf-girl’s going to make trouble for ya!
I’m not used to being open about myself...
“Um... Actually, I...”
Wolf-girl makes trouble for you, but
don’t call me a liar, it’s just awkward!

I can’t sleep;
the stars are shining brightly.
My heart’s beating fast,
I feel kinda dizzy...
Does it seem like I’m becoming strange?

I read the stars and saw our love;
I don’t know why!
When I noticed, there was nothing but you;
I couldn’t stop thinking about it!

Wolf-girl’s going to make trouble for ya!
I’m not used to being a good little kid...
“Um... Actually, I...”
Wolf-girl makes trouble for you, but
don’t call me a tsundere, it’s just embarrassing!

Wolf-girl’s going to make trouble for ya!
I’m still not used to being open about myself...
“Um... Actually, I...”
Wolf-girl makes trouble for you, but
“um... actually, I...”
“um... actually, I...”
I like you, I love you; it just can’t be helped!

Synchronicity lyrics

So, who thought I had forgotten about this?

Synchronicity (Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations OP)

Artist: Yui Makino

Writer/Composer/Arranger: Yuki Kajiura

Lyrics/

To where does this warmth go?
If tomorrow dawns, it will vanish...
If our heartbeats’ rhythm matches,
then we can descend into the same depths...

Always and forever together with you,
no matter where you have lost your way...

While we drifted amidst the darkness,
just like the innocent young bird, we received wings.
You hide your sadness behind a smile,
and with a blade of ice
expose your heart,
embracing it always...

To where are you going alone?
Turning back will only bring fear...
The shape of your heart, the color of loneliness,
surely, they are similar to the truth...

But someday, certainly, within our transience,
we have our eyes fixed on a place to return to...

Within this darkness, no matter how long we are apart,
the unbreakable bonds between our hearts will call us.
I understand that you smile even in sad times.
I want to warm your cold finger
with my tears...
Together...

While we drifted amidst the darkness,
just like the innocent young bird, we received wings.
You hide your sadness with a smile,
and with a blade of ice
expose your heart, embracing it...
Together, always...

Karaoke

Karaoke is perhaps the most enjoyable form of entertainment known to man. That's what I think, anyway.

Last night, there was a KCJS welcome party at Kyoto University, more often just called "Kyodai" (Kyoto Daigaku). That was pretty interesting; we got to hang out and meet Kyodai students, make new friends, etc. But after that, we went to do karaoke.

That was awesome. I've now done karaoke twice here in Japan, and every time I go, I end up having a great time. I mean, I like singing, and I like anime theme songs. And the karaoke places in Japan have pretty much any song you could think of, which means I can sing anything I want.

Last night... I sang a few different songs. Nana Mizuki, as always... she is my favorite J-pop artist after all. If I remember correctly, I sang three of hers: Eternal Blaze, the opening to Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, Don't be long, an insert song from the Nanoha 1st movie, and Young Alive!, from her most recent album.

そして、Don't be long、なのは1st MOVIEの挿入歌。

Then there were the well-known songs. I make it a point to sing Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis and Hare Hare Yukai whenever I get the chance. Everyone knows those songs. Or at least, they should. The Kyodai students sang the Dragonball Z theme song, too, so I wasn't the only one going for anime songs.

But I sang less well-known ones too. There was a song called True Blue, the ending theme to Sky Girls, and LEVEL5 ~judgelight~, the second opening to To Aru Kagaku no Railgun. And then there was an older one: the opening theme to the original Space Battleship Yamato anime.

In between the songs I sang and the ones everyone else sang, we started at eight in the evening and didn't finish until one in the morning. Nothing like doing karaoke for five hours straight.

In sum: whenever anyone wants to do karaoke, as long as it's okay, I will quite gladly come along.

Programming for non-fiction Lyrics

Programming for non-fiction (Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou OP)
Programming for non-fiction (よくわかる現代魔法オープニングテーマ)

Artist: Natsuko Aso

Writer: Saori Kodama

Composer/Arranger: Peijun

Lyrics/

This day of my dreams is my non-fiction,
a clear attraction.
Right now, this unfolding world is not a fantasy.
New code dances,
hoping to become a program in the future.

The log's tree, a list of experiences,
is more than a calculated answer.
Beyond the prism's squall,
I want to capture this premonition.

Fate alone is self-navigation,
since I can't wait anymore, self-education.
The described part alone changes my feelings into confidence.

This day of my dreams is my non-fiction,
a refined inevitability.
Right now, this unfolding world is not a fantasy.
Let's wait for the true brilliance;
I'll program in my own style.

I don't want to decide on my capacity,
I can't enjoy cowardice.
In neutral, I overreach myself slightly,
skipping over my heart.

This shuddering future is a good vibration,
these repainted ideals, a good sensation.
I'll continue to grow, myself, my dreams, and my reality.

今、広がる世界はso bright way

This day that I've been granted is some day's promised day;
everything starts here!
Right now, this unfolding world is so bright of a way.
I'll walk through the continued aspirations
that are always the prologue of tomorrow.

All along, I was warming to childish decisions, but
because you invite me to the truth
with the correct way of doing things...
Just one and only one...
Just one and only one...

Things like fate, self-navigation,
since it appears to be careless, self-education.
Drawn out, changed, these feelings are an irreplaceable energy.

This day of my dreams is my non-fiction,
a refined inevitability.
Right now, this unfolding world is not a fantasy.
Let’s wait for the real brilliance;
and in my own style,
even the image of a miracle can be created,
hoping to become a program in the future.

Translation Project: Japanese Songs

I did say that I wanted to practice my Japanese. Well, over the summer I’m planning to try translating all sorts of different Japanese stuff, just for the sake of practice. Of course, if I don’t show these translations to anyone, I won’t know if I make a mistake. Thus, I’ll just post them on this blog, showing them to everyone on the Internet.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the theme songs that most TV shows have. When I was in middle school, my parents sometimes watched a show called JAG, and the only thing I remember about that show was the quick little tune that served as its theme song. The same goes today for anime opening and ending themes. From really well-known songs such as Moonlight Densetsu or Hare Hare Yukai to lesser-known songs like LEVEL5 -judgelight- and Programming for non-fiction, I almost always like anime theme songs.

I also like singing. So, when I started listening to Japanese music, I started putting the lyrics in romaji, so that I could read them. Back then, in my first year of college, it would take hours on end to draw all of the unfamiliar kanji on a Nintendo DS kanji dictionary that I had; now, I know more about kanji and can look up unfamiliar ones more quickly.

Anyway, now that I need to practice my Japanese, simply writing the lyrics in romaji isn’t enough. I want to know if I can actually translate, if I can express the meaning of a Japanese song in English. That’s what I’m trying to do with this little project of mine.
